Encephalitis Toll Climbs to 589 in Gorakhpur

Another child succumbed to encephalitis here, taking the death toll in the viral disease in eastern Uttar Pradesh to 589 this year.

The child hailing from Gorakhpur died yesterday. Two more children suffering from the disease have been admitted to the BRD Medical College Hospital, officials said today.

As many as 3496 patients of Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome were admitted to different government hospitals of Gorakhpur and Basti divisions this year, of which 589 died.

This year, patients from Bihar and adjoining Nepal were also admitted to BRD MCH, they said adding that 52 patients from Bihar and three from Nepal succumbed to the disease in the hospital this year.

At this location, near the Hiranyavati River, Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana (or 'Final Nirvana') after falling ill from eating a meal of a species of mushroom, or possibly pork.

The present  district of   Gorakhpur,  265 Kms  east  of capital  Lucknow, on National  Highway -28 lies between Latitude   26° 46´ N and Longitude 83° 22´ E, covers  the  geographical  area of  3483.8  Sq. km.  It is bounded by  districts Mahrajganj  in the north, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh and Mau in the south,  Kushinagar and Deoria in the east and Sant Kabirnagar in the west.

Gorakhpur city,  (260 41' to 260 50' North latitude and 830 20'  to 830 27' East longitude)  is situated in the Terai belt of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, India.  Due to pleasant climate , it was considered  a mini hill station by British. In term of population growth , it is at present the second largest city, after Varanasi, in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Geographically the city is situated on the left bank of river Rapti at the confluence of the river Rapti and Rohin.

The History of Gorakhpur

The city has derived its name and fame from renowned saint Goraksha Nath. He is  popularly known as Gorakhnath, a guru in the Nath Yogi Sampradaya,  who came here in 9th century AD. This was the time when the region was ruled by Deopal, king of West Bengal (810-850AD) and  the yogi started practicing austerities on the spot where the famous temple named after him stands. It is believed that during that time  the river Rapti was flowing through the  center of the city following the path to Ramgarh lake. During epic period, the region covered the present district of Gorakhpur, known as karapatha which formed part of the kingdom of Kosala, an important center of Aryan culture and civilization.
